DEXTER’S FILMING LOCATIONS: HIS APARTMENT!
I finally did it! I was able to sneak into Dexter’s apartment in Miami (LEGALLY)! You know, the one you see in the initial “Morning routine” intro, at the end where he walks out of his house? That one! I will tell you all about it and how I made the impossible possible but I’ll also give you a few extra info about Dexter’s filming locations in Miami and some in Los Angeles.
Before getting into the nitty gritty of all this detailed info, I want to give you THE PROOF: I’ll show you my (very shaky) videos proving that I was indeed in Dexter’s apartment! Not inside the flat, that would be seriously illegal, but inside the building.
Apologies for the poor quality of the shooting but I wasn’t even thinking about writing an article about this, and I was super emotional and excited to be inside the place where my dear Dexter used to live, well at least in the tv show ?

WAS DEXTER FILMED IN MIAMI?
Before I go ahead and finally tell you my diabolic plan on how I managed to get in Dexter’s apartment , I want to give you the heads up on some of the most frequently asked questions about Dexter’s TV show. One of them is Dexter’s filming locations and whether the show was really filmed in Miami or not.
THE ANSWER: YES AND NO!
Not everyone knows that only the first season of Dexter was filmed entirely in Miami hence also Dexter’s real apartment was located in Miami. At the famous address which can now be found even on Google Maps: 1155 de la 103rd street at bay harbor island.
Insert either that address or directly “Dexter’s apartment” in Google Maps and you’ll get the directions from wherever you are in Miami. Including the route, the bus numbers, how long will it take you and and how much you need to walk from the bus stop to Dexter’s house.
RESPECT THE TENANTS PRIVACY WHEN TRYING TO GET INTO DEXTER’S APARTMENT
Sorry guys, I hear you. I have no clue on who decided to put Dexter’s filming locations in Miami (with his apartment’s sign) on Google Map, even if it’s private property. I promise that this article will be in favor of both parties: Dexter’s fans and the tenants who deserve their privacy.
I’m a massive fan but when I hear of people trespassing illegally and molesting the people who want to live their life in peace, I feel bad for them.

I want to encourage the fans to be respectful and try to find other creative and legal ways to fulfill their dream to see Dexter’s apartment without bothering the tenants.
Not everyone will be as lucky as I was, and I swear that if I didn’t have that opportunity, I would have never trespassed the property illegally.
FROM MIAMI TO LOS ANGELES: DEXTER’S APARTMENT REPLICA:
So, probably because all this fuss, from the second season on, the production changed Dexter’s filming locations from Miami to Los Angeles, building an exact replica of Dexter’s Apartment in the studios, where all the series was filmed (with the exception of some shootings from the outside of the house, some angles of the view from the balcony).
WHERE IS DEXTER’S APARTMENT IN MIAMI?
Of all Dexter’s filming locations in Miami, his apartment’s whereabouts was the top researched term on Google. Because Dexter’s apartment is in fact a real place and the filming happened in a real condo in the lovely Bay Harbor Club Marina, located in northern Miami.
CURIOUS FACT: Dexter’s Apartment in the show was located in a fictional place called “Palm Terrace”, but the real condo is at Bay Harbor club in Miami. The current selling price for apartments in the same condo as Dexter’s apartment (his one, the 10B, is not available) is around 238.000$. The flat right below Dexter’s Apartment is available but the inside looks completely different, and bigger too.
I’m not aware of the agreement between Dexter’s filming production and the other tenants living in there at the time, but the apartment was indeed a real, normal place where people lived normal lives.
CAN YOU VISIT DEXTER APARTMENT (IN MIAMI)?
Even if the last episode of Dexter aired in the US in 2013, years later fans like me still try to enter to realize their dream to be inside the property, leading the tenants to get …how should I put it? “SLIGHTLY IRRITATED” by the constant privacy violations (and I don’t blame them, can you?).
INCREASED SECURITY MEASURES NEARBY DEXTER’S APARTMENT
If you are thinking about visiting Miami to try and sneak into Dexter’s Apartment be careful because, as I will also explain later on, there is always a police car parked on the side of the property, checking for suspicious activity nearby the condo.
I knew that already, while doing my preliminary research for the plan, and took it int consideration to put together a strategy that might have worked. Below FINALLY all the details!
MY DETAILED PLAN TO ENTER DEXTER’S APARTMENT IN MIAMI
SIDE NOTE:
I’m copying and pasting what I wrote a few days after my adventure so that i could not forget any detail because back then I realized that maybe other people wanted to try their luck (in a legal way, NO TRESPASSING!)
WELL, HELLO…. DEXTER MORGAN!
THE PLAN “A”: RESEARCH AND ENTER!
I Did it, I did it, I really DID IT !!! Still, can’t believe it, but not only I saw the building from the outside….I was able to LEGALLY cross the forbidden gates and even went upstairs to Dexter’s apartment and stood on his very own balcony!
(If I were Lila I would have said “Pardon my tits” but I’d rather opt for a “pardon my excitement”) ?
DO YOUR RESEARCH BEFOREHAND
Entering Dexter’s apartment has never been easy, but a few years back quite a few people were able to find their (illegal) ways to break in the property. Nowadays, with the police on the secondary road and the tenants, who are very aware of the situation, it’s become almost impossible. But don’t be discouraged, I said ALMOST ?
THINGS YOU NEED TO RESEARCH:

If you want even a slight chance to succeed do some very thorough research online. Find articles like mine, check out videos and what dates these people were able to enter and HOW.
Check out the latest online entries, but don’t disregard the old ones, as long as the person didn’t trespass illegally they had found some creative ways to avoid police and angry tenants.
Research the area beforehand, if you can explore the neighborhood the day before is great. If you can find a hotel nearby is even better (this is the one I chose, 10 min walk from the house). I know it sounds crazy, but if you want to try your luck, this will increase it.
Finding the building is easy because it’s on Google Maps. So study the neighborhood. See where the police is located, and continue walking without stopping in front of the house for any reason.
My research went well because I find quite a few videos and posts but I got a bit discouraged by the results as just a tiny percentage of the people made it legally, while the others got in climbing the neighbor’s fence getting caught by either the residents or the police, so my easy plan, turned out to be not as easy. So I created a plan “B”
THE PLAN “A” FAILURE – PLAN B: WHAT DEXTER WOULD HAVE DONE?
FIRST STEP: CAMOUFLAGE
I went there looking the exact opposite of a tourist. I carefully studied how they dressed in the neighborhood the day before during my recollection, so I could pass as a local Miami babe (well … sort of ? ). I walked in front of the building at first, barely looking at it and I noticed the police car on the parking lot as usual.
I didn’t pay attention to them, I was part of that neighbors after all. Maybe a new entry but one of them none the less. I knew it was there all along.
SECOND STEP: DISTRACTING/MISLEADING THE POLICE & NEIGHBORS
I took my mobile and started faking a very animated conversation in English so that the policeman and the neighbors passing by could hear distinctively what I was saying. According to my fake phone call, I was pissed off at someone for letting me wait in there for so long as I had to be somewhere else. That move justified my whereabouts and my walking up and down the street.
THIRD STEP: THE DIVERSION (AND PLAYING DIRTY)
Then, 3 poor teenage girls approached me (not knowing what they were getting into, poor souls). My camouflage was good so they also assumed that I lived in the area, and they asked me, quite embarrassed if I knew where exactly was Dexter’s house. They were just in front of it (do your research young ladies, as Dexter’s fans you should know this basic rule).
I casually pointed out the entrance and told them that I lived around the corner so I knew that it was absolutely impossible to get in. I suggested them to have a look through the gates and just leave because it was a total waste of time.
Their dreams were crushed in just 5 minutes when they finally left. For my plan to work, I needed to be on my own, sorry girls… it was either you or me! I know, I know, this was cruel and i would have avoided it if I could, but they came at the wrong moment. Plus they were totally unprepared, so I doubt they would have make it anyway.

FOURTH STEP: PATIENTLY WAITING FOR THE RIGHT MOMENT (JUST LIKE DEXTER)
From that moment on i committed to be I super patient and alert. It took me more than 3 and a half hours to finally enter those gates. So why did I wait so long? And how did I get in?
On my way to the condo, I spotted two vans: One was from Amazon and one from UPS. I took my chances, hoping that one of them would deliver something to that building. I heard a few people were able to enter legally using this method. I took my chances.
FIFTH STEP: RESISTING THE TEMPTATIONS
I kept my fake phone call on and off and all of a sudden there it was: MY OPPORTUNITY, incarnated in one apparently serene resident coming out of those inaccessible gates.
I could have asked him nicely, but I knew that he would have probably replied with something….Debra style, so to speak! And I would have blown my whole cover. Too risky.
I was right: the man looked at me suspiciously for a second but, gladly, seeing that I wasn’t really paying attention to his condo, he walked past me without saying anything.
From my research, I knew that the residents would even call the police just because someone was standing in the proximity of the gate.

SIXTH STEP: BE HONEST, IT PAYS OUT!
At around 3 pm, hungry as hell finally, I met my angel: The Amazon guy! As soon as he parked in front of the gate, I came out of the “bushes” like a lion waiting for its prey and, with puppy eyes and the most disgustingly soft voice I’ve ever used in my life, I just told him: Hey, do you mind keeping the gate open for me please?
Now that’s the real trick! He was cool with that, as my camouflage as a local was excellent but I couldn’t risk the real residents knowing that I was a fake, so I decided to tell him the truth.
That’s what I candidly, and honestly, told him: “I know people ask you this all the time, but if you could do it for me, you will be my official hero! I didn’t even have to mention Dexter actually, he knew. Probably my puppy eyes gave me away.
But they apparently worked out well, because he probably took pity on me, I was alone so not a real nuisance, and after a few moments he nicely said the magic words: “OK GET IN..!
I couldn’t believe it and I think I have never thanked anyone in my life for so many times in a row, so I promised him that I would come in with him and leave the building with him. DEAL!!
SEVENTH STEP: RESPECT THE RULES AND THE DEAL
As soon as he entered the gates, I respectfully “escaped” to get upstairs, almost running, shooting a shaky video, from the first set of flats on the left to the ones where Dexter’s apartment was, those with only two floors.
All this in three minutes or less, my heart racing for the excitement, the emotion and a bit of fear.I was still a bit worried by the confused and suspicious look a woman gave me while reading a newspaper on her porch.
She looked at me and then at the delivery man, we were aiming to the same direction (apparently) so she assumed I was “safe” and she didn’t make a scene. But the inquisitive look she gave me was enough to make me rush!
CONCLUSION – THE TAKEAWAY:
So there you have it, the plan I had put together the night before, thinking that finding a delivery guy was truly my best shot, even if it was quite unlikely.But I still believed in my good luck and my patience. Apparently, when you really want something badly and you are patient…the universe (sometimes) gives you what you want!

If you are a fan, and you’re in Miami, feel free to try my trick, or something similar. I can’t guarantee success but planning beforehand and being patient was key in my case, so don’t give up hope to enter Dexter’s Apartment LEGALLY. Again: No Trespassing!
